Post Doctoral Research Scientist in Political Communication at the School of Media and Public Affairs
The George Washington University
August 2013-July 2014

This full time position is for a scholar who will be appointed as a postdoctoral research scientist to work closely for one year on research projects with Robert Entman, Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs, and Kimberly Gross, Associate Professor of Media and Public Affairs. The position is designed for a recent recipient of the Ph.D. For 2013-14, research will focus on the politics and policies of inequality, using quantitative and qualitative content analysis of media and experimental research.

The fellow will devote three to four days per week to collaborative work with Professor Entman and the rest of the time to research projects of their choosing. This position carries a $50,000 salary and comes with full benefits.

The person appointed must have a Ph.D. in communication, political science or a related discipline by August 1, 2013 and an excellent record of published research in political communication or a record suggesting great promise as demonstrated by scholarly works in progress and recommendations. Preference will be given to individuals with extensive experience in quantitative content analysis. Background and training in experimental methods is highly desirable.

The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs (SMPA) is looking for a part-time Events Coordinator. The Coordinator will assist with major SMPA events to help build school identity and community while raising the profile of the SMPA brand. The candidate must have demonstrated success in conceiving and executing high-profile free and paid events for the general public. Event experience in the politics, media or public affairs industries is a plus. Duties include comprehensive project and event management, speaker booking, budgeting, catering, event logistics, some event marketing, and other duties as assigned to execute both small and large events. The position will provide some administrative support, oversee volunteers, and provide on-site management during weekday and weeknight events. Applicants must have superior organizational skills, attention to detail, be proactive, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong computer skills, and an extremely polished and professional demeanor. The School of Media and Public Affairs is in search of a leading journalist and educator to advance the school’s commitment to preparing students for our diverse, multi-platform media environment. This is a full-time, non-tenure-accruing, fixed-term, renewable faculty position offered at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The rank is commensurate with the candidate’s experience and body of work. Communications and Marketing Assistant Job Description

Want some real-world experience while earning extra money? The SMPA Communications and Marketing Director is looking for a part-time Communications Assistant. Applicants must be proactive, extremely organized, creative, tech-savvy, and feel comfortable interacting with professionals on a regular basis. Demonstrated experience with Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, video production, HTML, social media sites (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc) and solid journalistic writing are a must. Duties include conducting interviews and writing entries for the SMPA blog, writing and production of multiple digital e-newsletters, designing marketing materials, some event logistics, compiling and executing student outreach and marketing strategy, updating SMPA website listings, and various other administrative and marketing tasks. The assistant must able to contribute creatively to the development of the SMPA brand.

Both GW undergraduate and graduate students may apply. Please note whether you have work study money in your cover letter. Pay is consummate with experience and candidates must be available 12-15 hours per week (Monday morning availability is mandatory.) SMPA's Planet Forward seeks a creative and enthusiastic producer to help curate great ideas, and bring them to our audience online and on TV. SMPA's Planet Forward seeks candidates for the position of Outreach Coordinator.

The Outreach Coordinator is in charge of managing relationships with external partners and organizations. This includes finding ideas, recruiting participants, instructing them on how to create videos or participate with us, and helping to plan competitions that will encourage them to work with us.

Candidates should have a strong background in energy and environmental issues, and feel comfortable talking to entrepreneurs, research teams, professors, business leaders, and students about their ideas.

In addition, the Outreach Coordinator also will be tasked, on occasion, with coordinating the marketing materials for the organization. This includes marketing packets, palm card, fliers, one-page documents, binders, and anything else that is needed for a variety of situations. Much of this material already exists, but needs to be constantly updated to reflect the organization's progress. Some Photoshop experience is required.

Desired Qualifications:
-Experience in marketing and outreach to a college audience, especially students, both through digital and in-person tools.
-Experience engaging faculty in promoting their work preferred.
-Production experience with HD cameras, Final Cut Pro preferred.
-Experience working with high-profile talent and guests preferred.
-Experience working in an environment with regular deadline pressure. Ability to work in such an environment with limited supervision.
-Bachelor’s degree from accredited university.

Job Description:
Hours are generally standard working hours, but a flexible schedule occasionally may be required to meet project deadlines or accommodate the schedules of key stakeholders or subjects. Benefits, including tuition reimbursement, included, as this position is a staff position at The George Washington University. The Outreach Coordinator will report to the Executive Producer, Fuzz Hogan.

Working Conditions:
The incumbent performs jobs duties in a normal business office environment. Tasks are often carried out in a sedentary format, but significant parts of this job requires incumbent to work in the field, despite weather conditions, carrying camera and production equipment. The incumbent will be required to attend meetings in other offices and deliver and/or retrieve information from other offices around campus and Washington, DC.

The Center for Innovative Media at the School of Media and Public Affairs is seeking advanced researchers to help launch a high-profile election year initiative to counter misinformation and "spin" in the political process.  Applicants should have a strong interest in current affairs, a commitment to fact-based discourse and a desire to make a difference.  They should have experience in primary source research (e.g. census data, government reports, budgets). This interdisciplinary research team will explore important issues relevant to debt and deficit, education, health care, entitlements, foreign policy and more.

The project will start immediately and continue throughout the summer and fall.  All positions are paid and hours are flexible.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Find data, trends and facts from primary sources
-Participate in meetings that will guide research
-Help execute a digital outreach strategy, including social media, as needed
