Professor Janet Steele wrote to us from Indonesia to share news of the overseas Global Scholars program she took with several SMPA students. The trip concentrated on Media and Education in Southeast Asia.

Prof. Steele and students

Global Scholars visit an Indonesian newspaper with Professor Steele.

I'm sending you a link to this week's "Email from America," which is my weekly column in Surya, the second largest newspaper in the city of Surabaya, East Java.  I'm also going to cut and paste a translation below.  I thought people might be interested in seeing both the original Indonesian and the translation of my account of the first week of our Global Scholars' trip.

Three of the seven students (Clara Pak, Andrea Vittorio, Jennifer Neuner) are SMPA majors.  A fourth, Lauren Hepler, is a journalism minor.

Fellow Ratih Prebatasari in the field.

Arriving here at SMPA today are twenty international documentarians who are in town to participate in the six-week "International Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship" organized by our Documentary Center.  During their stay, Fellows will produce two documentaries on state-of-the-art equipment here at GW, travel to NYC, meet notable filmmakers, instruct middle and high school teachers at the well-known SILVERDOCS festival, and then go back to their home countries and teach others all they have learned here.  What an opportunity!

Ryder Haske

Recent graduate Ryder Haske is rarely far from a camera.

Recent SMPA graduate Ryder Haske departs today on the trip of a lifetime – a forty-seven day journey across South Africa. Making the trip with him are his two best friends, a large collection of multimedia equipment, and the realization that over eighteen months of planning have finally paid off.

He is leaving to begin a reporting trip telling the untold stories behind the month-long FIFA World Cup occurring in South Africa, the first country in Africa to host.  He will be capturing video, writing, and photographs, some of which will make it onto his blog and others compiled into a documentary to be produced upon his return.  Here is more about his journey in his own words… Read the rest of this entry »

Silvio Waisbord, our resident editor of the Journal of International Press/Politics, wrote in to tell us about another publishing effort, this time in the Journal of Health Communication...

Silvio Waisbord

Prof. Silvio Waisbord in conversation

"The papers I co-wrote are based on research I conducted during the past eight years on the role of communication and media in polio campaigns. With my colleagues, I observed and evaluated polio campaigns in Angola, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and India. The work basically consisted on reviewing materials used to communicate to communities (about immunization campaigns, number of doses, the dangers of polio), participating in activities (information campaigns, administering vaccines, monitoring/evaluation), and talking to health workers and families about their experiences with health and the health system."
